Background Information
I. The Amazon
The Amazon is the longest river in South America, It has the most flow capacity and the largest drainage area in the world, It rises in the Andes Mountains in Peru and is as long as 6500 kilometers , For tens of thousands of years , the Amazon winds its way across the vast plain , making lots of lakes and flood land , In the drainage , area of the Amazon , the climate is damp and hot and it rains a lot every year . The tropical jungle covers most of the drainage area, with many kinds of plants growing there, There are as many as some 2000 kinds of fishes and other kinds of aquatic animals, such as manatees, freshwater suckling pigs and crocodiles, Among those, there is a kind of small fierce freshwater fish, called piranha. They are man - eating. If someone is not careful enough and falls into the water, a great number of them will attack him together, They can eat up a human being in a short time, That is the kind of " dangerous fish “, referred to in the text.
II. The Tropical Jungle of the Amazon
The tropical jungle of the Amazon lies in the drainage area of the Amazon, and is the largest degrees north latitude and sixteen degrees south latitude and covers an area of 7.000.000 square kilometres; there are rich natural resources in the vast tropical jungle. The ecosystem of this area depends on the Amazon. The water vapour from the sea flows into the mainland and the rain falls, the water makes the forest grow and leaks into the soil. Much of it flows into the Amazon and to the sea at last. This forms the cycling of the water. There are many kinds of plants growing in the area. You can see bushes, tall herbs as well as tall trees, which grow rather too thickly.
