Step Ⅰ. Greeting
Greet the whole class as usual .
Step Ⅱ. Revision
Ask the Ss the following quick questions about the life and work of Charlie Chaplin.
Where was he born?
Did he direct any films?
What did he carry in his hand?
Did he act in any silent films?
Did he direct in any films with music?
Which were more popular, his early films or his later films?
Step Ⅲ. Preparation for reading and Reading
1.First say the following to the Ss: Today we are going to read about one of Charlie Chaplin’s films. Before we learn about it, I want to introduce some new words or phrases to you.
2.Show the new words on the screen and give them brief introduction in English. (Here omitted)
3.Give Ss three minutes and let them read the text quickly, and try to find the answer to the question.
What did Chaplin eat in this film?
—A pair of shoes.
4.Check the answer and deal with the following. Show them on the screen.
(1) The play is set in Paris.
The novel is set in the 18th century England.
(2) Jack has picked up a large number of Chinese stamps.
(3) Shanghai is known as the base of China’s industry.
(4) We have never heard from him so far.
(5) The boys went in search of something to eat.
(6) He was caught in a heavy rain.
She had been caught in a traffic Jam.
Step Ⅳ. Language study
1.First teacher writes two sentences on the Bb. Ask the Ss to join them. Of course help them if necessary.
In some films he added music. He wrote this music himself.
→In some films he added music, which he wrote himself.
2.Then teacher tells the Ss that the clause “which he wrote himself” gives extra information. It belongs to the Non-restrictive attributive clause, often with comma.
3.Begin dealing with Part 2.
Step Ⅴ. Practice
1.Deal with Part 3. Do the first three with the whole class, then let the Ss work in pairs. At the end check the answers with the whole class.
